Black History Month: What is it and Reasons to celebrate it
Black history month is here again! It is another fantastic moment to recognize and celebrate the immense contribution of African American and Caribbean descent in U.S history. It is a time when we remember the accomplishment of the Black ancestors. Black History Month reminds us to celebrate the contribution and achievement of the African American and Caribbean people. Black History Month presents a once-in-a-year opportunity to tell and remind the world of the struggles and accomplishments of African Americans.
How Black History Month Started
Black history month, which began in nineteen twenty-six as a “Negro History Week,” was started by the second African American Ph.D. holder Carter G Woodson. For Woodson, black history was so important and thus needed to be available for everybody apart from the small group of academics. He was determined to share African American history, resulting in the birth of Negro History Week. He opted for the second week of February; it coincided with former President Lincoln and Frederick Douglass (a social activist) birth dates as both played a vital role in abolishing slavery.
Why Black History Month Still Matters
Recognizing the month of February as a Black History Month deems the event as an important moment that should be remembered. The periods remind the African Americans of the reasons to preserve their cultures, pay tribute to the slave ancestors, and retain their bravery.
